Vail's Mills School Mayfield, New York
A school which may or may not have been the original stood on opposite side of the pond from the
present one (about 1939.) The latter was built over a hundred years ago. The older building was
moved and made into a blacksmith shop. One of the outstanding teachers was William Granger who
Vernon, N.Y. Another teacher was George Denton who was later principal at Broadalbin his native
Teachers also were Mr. Paterson of Mayfield and Mrs. Peterson. In 1930 the Vails Mills school
became a part of Broadalbin Central District. At this time it had ony the first six grades. In 1934-35
there were over 40 pupils.
In 1835 $24.68 was appointed to the District - Public Money. March 22nd 1879 an order on the
supervisor of Mayfield, William Van Nostrand to ay H.D. McConkey $32.10 on account of wages while
duly qualified teacher in School District # 2 between the 25th of November and the 24th of March
1879.
